Job Title: General Staff Position

Reports To: Shelter Manager

Job Summary: General Staff position will be up to 24 hours a week part time for Lockport CARES emergency shelter. Must be available various days and shifts, including some overnights, weekends and holidays This person will help provide the service needed to help the homeless, who stay at the shelter, with compassion, dignity and respect.

Required Education:

High School Diploma or GED


Additional Qualifications:

·         Dedication to providing support to individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

·         The ability to provide crisis intervention when necessary.

·         Able to communicate clearly to guests and volunteers in any situation.

·         Commitment to be on time and cover scheduled shifts.

·         Able to be flexible with schedule.

Essential Functions and Duties:

·         Maintain a clean, secure and safe environment for the guests, volunteers and all who enter Lockport CARES emergency shelter.

·         Be available and flexible to assure all aspects of shelter operation are carried out: including but not limited to housekeeping, i.e. steam cleaning guest bed units when needed and cleaning refrigerators and freezers, doing shelter and guest personal laundry, ensuring meals are lined up for the day.

·         Be flexible in your schedule to meet the needs of the shelter

·         Maintain an inventory of donations and supplies notifying shelter manager when we have a need or oversupply

·         Sort, dating, laundering and storing donations.

·         Help shelter manager keep guest personal belongings left behind either returned to guest or donated within 1 month (maximum) from time of leaving

·         Participate in in-services and volunteer meetings as scheduled

·         Report any incidence of child abuse or neglect to shelter manager.

·         Report any unsafe or illegal activity to shelter manager.

·         Be sensitive to cultural diversity and respectful of all guests regardless of their beliefs or practices.

·         Provide brief emotional support to a guest as needed.

·         Help with any paperwork, copying or collating as directed.
